Virginia Lee Montgomery

Virginia L. Montgomery (b. Houston, TX) is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist working across video, sound, and sculpture, based in Austin and Houston, Texas. She received her MFA from Yale University and her BFA from The University of Texas at Austin. Her surreal, synesthesia-inspired practice unites mysticism, science, and her neurodivergent AuDHD perspective through material experimentation, hand-raised moths and butterflies, and science-themed storytelling centered on metamorphosis. Her research-driven artworks explore cosmic wonder through dreamlike moving images, immersive soundscapes, and tactile sculptural forms. Montgomery has presented solo projects with New Museum (NY), Times Square Arts (NY), Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts (AL), Lawndale Art Center (TX), George Eastman Museum (NY), Museum Folkwang (Germany), and Tate Film at Tate Modern (United Kingdom), among others. She has exhibited with SculptureCenter (NY), CCS Hessel Museum (NY), Cantor Arts Center (CA), Ballroom Marfa (TX), Contemporary Austin (TX), Blaffer Art Museum (TX), Moody Arts Center (TX), and Blanton Museum of Art (TX), among others. She has been an artist-in-residence at MacDowell (NH), McDonald Observatory (TX), and Headlands Center for the Arts (CA).
